SUMOMO
Series: Chobits
In 2004, my friends and I were really into Chobits and we all decided to cosplay together. I chose to cosplay Sumomo but because it was only my second cosplay, the construction process very difficult for me! There were no patterns that matched Sumomo’s bodysuit exactly and I chose inappropriate, non-stretchy fabric which made everything that much more difficult. Because of the stiffness of the fabric, a zipper had to be inserted into the back and the entire suit never fit properly after that. The pants were easy enough but my Mom and I underestimated how much fabric we would need for the pants so we ended up having to add more later on which put a random horizontal seam about 3 inches from the ground. The sleeves were awful as well. The way the bodysuit was constructed left it impossible for the sleeves to have a poof so instead, the bottoms of the sleeves had to be held up with safety pins to give the illusion of a poof. The scarf and bow were very cute though! The wig was a china doll wig with a curled extension added to the top. The hat is made of a styrofoam ring base with a fabric cover. As if the costume wasn't bad enough, our Chii and Freya were unable to join us and that left my Kotoko, Hideki, and I to wander around alone. We still had fun but it really wasn't what we had hoped for without our other friends. Despite all the problems surrounding the costume, I still had a great time at the con. Also, Kayla, Shelly, and I eventually got to dress up together for a photoshoot so Sumomo has finally served its purpose and can be retired in peace.
